"We are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our religion,
our arts, have their root in Greece."

----------- Greece is vivid Aegean blue, worn white marble, fresh green grape orchards and hot, golden sand. Salty olives, graviera cheese, fresh seafood and aromatic ouzo delight one's palate. As we walked midst the majestic, iconic structures, we imagined the ancient Greeks, living their daily lives, according to the rules of their divine gods and goddesses. As we travelled by both ferry and sailboat amongst the islands, we were captivated by the same gorgeous views that Homer described n his epic poems. ------------- |
Our Rick Steves Greece tour
by: Ellen and Deryl Burzynski travellers from Saskatchewan, Canada! Like many people, what we knew about Greece before our trip consisted of: iconic photos of blue and white buildings and the massive Parthenon; eating 'Greek' food (aka olives and feta cheese); and drinking ouzo! Opa! We had a little knowledge of the Greek gods, but that's about it. This trip taught us so much! You could truly spend a lifetime in Greece and only see a small part of it! We hope you enjoy our memories of our tour and it inspires you to visit! |
GREEK MYTHOLOGY AND HISTORY
Greece is a land rich in mythology
that permeates and influences so much of its culture and our own culture even today. Going to Greece is like stepping into a time machine! Everywhere you go, you are reminded of an ancient time when the Greek people worshipped the gods and goddesses to such an extent that they built magnificent temples and buildings to honour them. Like the myths of many other cultures, those of ancient Greece suggest how the world was created and why events happened. There are many films and a myriad of books about Greek mythology so you don't have to read The Illiad or The Odyssey! (but they are wonderful!) I enjoyed Song of Achilles and Circe (both by Madeline Miller); Percy Jackson series (by Ricki Riodan - juvenile literature but well-written); My Family and Other Animals (Gerald Durrell); and Penelopiad (Margaret Atwood).
