Day 4 - Peloponnese Mountains
Kalavryta, Planitero, Ladkadia
Today we continued our tour into the Peloponnese mountains.
We crossed over the Gulf of Corinth and headed to Kalvrita for lunch.
We could have ridden the bus but why do that when you can ride up on a cog railway instead!

Roadside Shrines - Iconstates or Kandilakia
I was fascinated by the roadside shrines along the roadways and constantly tried to photo them as we whizzed by on our bus!
(Hence the blurry photos!) There are two kinds—one in memory of those who lost their lives in a road accident there and the other are votive offerings to thank God for a miraculous survival. Many resemble small churches and have tiny glass doors. Inside the shrine there is often a candle, a bottle of oil, a faded photo of the loved one, and some personal offerings. The larger image was taken on our hike in Santorini. What a beautiful , loving memorial! |
Lunch at the village of Planitero, Menalon Mountains
We were treated to a delicious lunch, prepared just for us, of freshly caught trout, which we skillfully (more of less) filleted. Time for good food and fellowship in a beautiful setting with ancient moss-covered trees and a mountain stream gurgling in the background. |

Lagkadia
We drove high up into the Menalon Mountain and arrived at Lagkadia.
We enjoyed a group meal in the Maniatis Restaurant.
Later that evening, we were treated to traditional Greek Dancing performed by a local dance family.
Lots of fun and laughter!
